5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Skin & Coat Supplement

Looking to support your dog or cat’s healthy skin and coat? When choosing a supplement, take a closer look at its ingredients and the information behind the formulation.

Here are five questions to ask before you buy.

1. Does it contain biotin?

Biotin (vitamin B7) is one of the most important nutrients for skin and coat. It supports the production of keratin, the protein that hair is made from. When choosing a supplement, check that biotin is included as an active ingredient, not just a trace amount.

2. Does it contain zinc, and in what form?

Zinc supports the normal growth of hair and the health of the skin. Not all zinc is absorbed equally well, though. Chelated zinc, which is zinc bound to an amino acid, is generally better absorbed and gentle on the stomach.

3. Does it include omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain a healthy skin barrier and support a soft, glossy coat. Look for a supplement that includes them as part of a complete skin and coat formula.

4. Is the label clear and transparent?

You should be able to see exactly what your pet is getting and how much. A clear ingredient list and straightforward feeding guide by weight make it easy to give the right amount every day.

5. Is it made to recognized quality standards, and will your pet actually take it?

Look for supplements made to recognized quality standards, such as GMP+ certification, with full traceability from raw ingredients to finished product. And of course, the best supplement is the one your pet happily takes. Tasty, easy-to-give formats make the daily routine much simpler.
